Earliest meeting: Thursday 29th September 1853
Final meeting: Tuesday 7th July 1857
The earliest record of racing in the Essex town of Southminster was in 1853 on a course called the Lloyd’s Stake course which was circular, with tight bends and a circumference of barely 5 furlongs. The Stewards were James Malden and James Gale and the principal event of the afternoon was the Lloyd Stakes which went to 5/1 outsider Baronet, beating the evens favourite Lady Susan owned by one of the Stewards. A meeting was staged in late September 1854 when the Clerk of the Course was Mr R Willsmere from the King’s Head, where an Ordinary was served after racing. The only unfortunate part of a glorious days sport was that there were two cases of cholera reported. Racing continued for each of the next 3 years, with a final meeting on Tuesday 7th July 1857.
